Introduction

Babylon is a site-specific original artwork commissioned for the 2024 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. This inhabitable installation features a stacked assembly of blocks that creates a cathedral-like interior void, enhanced by projection mapping to form a kaleidoscopic cinematic environment. Measuring 60’ x 60’ x 60’, Babylon consists of 64 steel-framed components clad in plywood and sprayed with plant-based cellulose insulation, resulting in a tower made of meticulously stacked monoliths. The visual narrative of the film has been specifically curated to take full advantage of the unique 360-degree, multi-faceted projection surface.

This installation explores themes of monumentality and exuberance. Its form reflects Nebbia’s interest in contradictory structures that seem both primitive and otherworldly, as well as solid yet fragile. It examines how architecture, in its most ancient forms, has universally served to help humanity understand and transcend the natural world, striving to reach the skies both physically and metaphysically. Babylon is designed to be both observed and experienced, featuring stark contrasts between its interior and exterior. The imposing exterior serves as a stepped gateway to the stars, while the interior offers a moment of immersive escapism.
