Introduction

We were invited to propose a new facade for a hotel in Beijing. Drawing inspiration from the site’s rich history of performance, showmanship, and acrobatics, we proposed a facade that embodies these themes. Our focus is on creating a facade that evokes a sense of balance and equilibrium, appearing both perfectly harmonious and intriguingly precarious at the same time.

We are fascinated by moments of natural magic—those instances that challenge our perceptions and make us momentarily suspend belief. These are the moments that prompt us to reconsider the physics, weight, and materiality of familiar structures. By experimenting with materiality, geometry, and perception, we aim to design a facade that is both sophisticated and playful, inviting viewers to engage with its visual and structural complexity.
