Introduction

This commissioned research project develops a system of creating bespoke, recyclable street furniture that is made from, and is an expression of a desert landscape. The design makes use of construction waste aluminium and can be 100% recycled with a waste-free mould making process. The intention is to create an easily repeatable and adaptable local fabrication method, utilizing the local resources as a promotion of sustainable craft and fabrication, whilst still creating something beautiful and unique.

With the vast amount of sand immediately available from the site we are proposing to create a bench by sand casting aluminium directly into a negative mould dug into the sand in any form we desire, in this scenario an irregular ring. The top surface is polished to create an elegant, shimmering piece of liquid furniture emerging from the rough ground with the imprint of the sand visible in the sides of the metal.
