Introduction
We were approached by Universal Music Group to collaborate with one of their musicians on an experimental aural-spatial installation. This semi-permanent installation aims to offer a groundbreaking spatial performance experience for a site-specific composition. Architecture, the body, and sound share an inherent interconnectedness, each governed by rhythms and cycles—melody and noise, day and night, life and death. In exploring these themes, we were inspired by the Towers of Silence, which are central to the Zoroastrian burial tradition. Within these circular structures, the deceased are laid out for vultures to consume, returning the organic body to nature while the soul departs. This process became a compelling metaphor for our project, representing the cyclical nature of life and death, and the relationship between architecture, the body, and sound.
The installation is conceived as an infinite piece of music within an infinite architectural space, drawing on the Towers of Silence as a powerful, albeit extreme, precedent. While it can be viewed as a symbol of loss and the grotesque, it equally embodies themes of rebirth, reuse, and euphoria.
The design incorporates prefabricated concrete sections, repurposed to form an acoustic wall, performance space, and intimate listening chambers. This material choice was made to create a universal design that could be easily adapted for various locations, making the installation both flexible and impactful.
